Colloidal silver appears to be a powerful, natural antibiotic and preventative against infections. Acting as a catalyst, it reportedly disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. They suffocate without corresponding harm occurring to human enzymes or parts of the human body chemistry. The result is the destruction of disease-causing organisms in the body and in the food.

Early Research

Colloidal silver was in common use until 1938. Many remember their grandparents putting silver dollars in milk to prolong its freshness at room temperature. At the turn of the century, scientists had discovered that the body’s most important fluids are colloidal in nature: suspended ultra-fine particles. A letter from the FDA dated 9/13/91 states: “These products may continue to be marketed . . . as long as they are advertised and labeled for the same use as in 1938 and as long as they are manufactured in the original manner.” Some of the manufacturing methods used before 1938 are still used today. An electro-colloidal process, which is known to be the best method, is used.

Contemporary Studies

While studying regeneration of limbs, spinal cords and organs in the late 1970s, Robert O. Becker, M.D., author of The Body Electric, discovered that silver ions promote bone growth and kill surrounding bacteria. The March 1978 issue of Science Digest, in an article, “Our Mightiest Germ Fighter,” reported: “Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic.” The article ended with a quote by Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and pioneering silver researcher who worked with the late Carl Moyer, M.D., chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery in the 1970s: “Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have.”

How It Works

The presence of coloidal silver near a virus, fungus, bacterium or any other single celled pathogen disables its oxygen metabolism enzyme, its chemical lung, so to say. Within a few minutes, the pathogen suffocates and dies, and is cleared out of the body by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, collodial silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of primitive single-celled life. Thus colloidal silver is absolutely safe for humans, reptiles, plants and all multi-celled living matter.

Product Quality

Many brands of colloidal silver are inferior. The highest grade is produced by the electro-colloidal / non-chemical method where the silver particles and water have been colloided, i.e., dispersed within and bound to each other by an electric current. The super-fine silver particles are suspended indefinitely in demineralized water. The ideal color of colloidal silver is greenish. Light colors indicate larger silver particles that tend to collect at the bottom of the container and are not true colloids. If a product contains a stabilizer or lists trace elements other than silver, or if it needs to be shaken, it is inferior. If a product requires refrigeration, some other ingredient is present that could spoil. Some brands with high concentrations of silver may actually not be completely safe. High concentrations of silver do not kill disease germs more effectively than the safe range of 15 to 25 parts per million (ppm.).

Ingesting Colloidal Silver

Taken orally, the silver solution is absorbed from the mouth into the bloodstream, then transported quickly to the body cells. Swishing the solution under the tongue briefly before swallowing may result in faster absorption. In three to four days the silver may accumulate in the tissues sufficiently for benefits to begin. Colloidal silver is eliminated by the kidneys, lymph system and bowel after several weeks. If routinely exposed to dangerous pathogenic germs, some recommend a regular daily intake as a protection.

Products sold under the general label ‘colloidal silver’ (CS) may actually be any one of three distinct products:

- Ionic silver        – Silver protein        – True CS

Ionic

Most products labeled and sold as CS are, unfortunately, ionic . This is because it is so much easier and less costly to produce this type. Among misrepresented facts, this is perhaps the most common.

Ionic products are made up of silver ions and particles. Using electrolysis, the manufacturer produces the ions. These ions are really dissolved silver. Because most (about 90%) of ionic products is dissolved silver instead of particles, these are really solutions of this metal only.

These products are frequently advertised as containing ions that are small particles. That is confusing, however, since silver ions are different from particles.

The ions combine with chloride ions to form silver chloride, but the particles do not.

Some manufacturers hide the identity of their ionic variety behind terms such as monatomic silver and silver hydrosol. These names are used to hide the truth from you. You are getting an ionic solution, not colloidal. So don’t be fooled.
If the product is clear, like water with sugar dissolved in it, it is ionic, not CS which has an apparent color. This is a fact.

How To Test For Ionic Silver

Add table salt to the product. If the ions are present, the solution should turn cloudy. If it remains clear, however, it may simply mean none is present at all. Unfortunately, lab analysis has shown that some products contain absolutely no silver.

A colloid is a combination of particles of one substance, dispersed throughout another substance, which are too small to be seen with an ordinary light microscope, but cannot pass through a semipermeable membrane.

When referring to CS, the word colloid means silver particles. True CS contains mostly silver particles. True CS will usually contain 50 to 80%. The remainder will be silver ions.

Colloidal silver has exploded on the web as a supplement, heralded as a cure all, and cursed by some officials that seem to be motivated by the large pharmaceuticals.

Colloidal silver was used as a natural antibiotic prior to the discovery of penicillin. The new antibacterial agent was the drug of favor worldwide. Colloidal silver was shoved to the back of medical consciousness and found little use after 1929. But wait, the medical world did not stop using silver. Colloidal silver, a liquid suspension of the metal silver, is currently a hot topic in the world of medicine

While alternative medicine praises its use as an antibiotic, mainstream medicine considers it somewhat of a poison. But colloidal silver is neither a poison nor a panacea: It is a safe and proven topical antibiotic that may cautiously be used internally. At the turn of the century, scientists had discovered that the body’s most important fluids are colloidal in nature; suspended ultra-fine particles. Blood, for example, carries nutrition and oxygen to the body cells. This led to further studies on colloidal silver with some amazing findings.

However, it was not until 1970′s when colloidal silver established its real identity. During this period, Dr. Robert O. Becker, MD, noted biomedical researcher from Syracuse University, and author of The Body Electric and Cross Currents, conducted several experiments with colloidal silver. Under his expert guidance, extensive research into the curative properties of silver has been conducted for many years at the Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse University.

On the safety of silver, he said, "in no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.’ He concluded with his statement ‘What we have actually done was rediscover the fact that silver kills bacteria, which had been known for centuries … when antibiotics were discovered, clinical uses for silver as an antibiotic were discarded.’

The March 1978 issue of Science Digest, in an article, "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter," reported: "Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic." The article ended with a quote by Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and pioneering silver researcher who worked with the late Carl Moyer, M.D., chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery in the 1970s: "Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have."

Colloidal silver safe for good intestinal bacteria

Former teacher of physics and chemistry, Howard Mitchell of Virginia, recently conducted a series of experiments with colloidal silver. He found that colloidal silver has no effect on acidophilus, the "good bacteria" found in the stomach. Mitchell used concentrations forty times higher than what might be expected to destroy other forms of bacteria. It shows that even in large dosages, the intestinal flora will flourish. In fact, there is speculation that the silver ions may be advantageous in stimulating a vigorous growth of beneficial bacteria, helping to boost the immune system. This is good news! Some people experience diarrhea when they ingest too much colloidal silver. No problem, they cut back on the amount of colloidal silver, and the lactobacilli counts return to normal within 12 hours without any intervention.

Silver as a cure for HIV

An obscure but crucial discovery was made at the Biochemistry Unit of Upjohn Laboratories in 1991: "Among a number of metal ions tested, Zn2+ (zinc), Cn2+ (copper), and Ag1+ (silver) were found to be the most effective inhibitors of renin and the HIV protease (data not shown). Further analysis revealed that inhibition of renin by Ag1+ (silver) is basically identical with that seen with Zn2+ (zinc), i.e., concompetitive, first order with respect to the metal." Biochemistry, September 10, 1991. Further testing at Upjohn, including a clinical trial, revealed that zinc was toxic in effective dosages. This was the first report that silver is a highly effective protease inhibitor. Over the following years, this same discovery would be made several times. Tichy, a full time member of the administrative staff at Brigham Young University’s physical plant, said he had the material tested at two different labs; results showed the solution killed a variety of pathogens, including the HIV virus.

A year later, this same discovery was made at the University Medical Center in Geneva, Switzerland: "Metal-binding proteins are important components of retroviruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Therefore, metals could be used as antiviral agents. Silver is a highly active bactericidal metal with little toxicity for humans. Silver has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of HIV protease."

Three years later, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, made this same discovery apparently independently by Earl E. Henderson, Ph.D. Professor: "We tested the ability of biotic silver protein to inhibit human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication in the human T cell line, SupT 1, as measured by syncytia formation. We found that pure silver protein inhibited HIV-1 replication in SupT 1 cells as measured by a reduction in the appearance syncytia in cell culture. There appeared to be little if any acute toxicity associated with the dose of biotic silver protein which inhibited HIV-1 replication…These results are very encouraging and suggest additional experiments that could be done…"

A lot of research is still being conducted with colloidal silver and with it, colloidal silver is making inroads to our daily life. It is being used as a main ingredient for making soaps. With its germ fighting virtues, such soaps are quite popular among masses.
